Fishing methods

Angling with a hook and line and ice-fishing fall under the Everyman’s Right in Finland (for more information about Everyman’s Right in Finland, please visit www.nationalparks.fi. When angling with a hook and line it is not permitted to use a lure or a rod intended for spinning without obtaining a fishing permit. You also need permission from the owner of the water area and a fishing permit that covers the municipality.

Angling with bait is a “passive“ method of fishing, in which the rod is left leaning against something and then you just wait for the catch. As a lure you can use bait paste, rain worms or bait fish.

Trolling means angling out of a moving boat, using bait such as wobbler. You can also use several rods.

Jigging is a throw-fishing technique in which you use a jig, a kind of lure. A jig consists of a lead sinker with a hook molded into it and usually covered by a soft body to attract fish. Jigs are intended to create a jerky, vertical motion, as opposed to spinnerbaits which move through the water horizontally. In jigging you let the lure sink to the bottom and pull back so that the jig jumps along the lake bottom.

In vertical jigging the jig stays 0.5 to 1 meter above the bottom and you drive or row the boat slowly or drift downstream with the current.

Drop shot is the same as vertical jigging, except that a special drop shot weight makes the bait sink closer to the bottom, allowing a better control of the fishing depth.

Net fishing is possible almost all throughout the year, depending on the ice conditions. The nets need to be marked clearly, and fishing permits are required.

Spinning is possible on the shore or from a boat, but not allowed everywhere. A rod, reel, line and lure are needed.

Crab fishing

A fishing permit is required. A crab trap with bait is left in the water, for example, for three hours and then checked.
